Indexing Techniques in Wireless Environments
by Xu Yang
Wireless and mobile computing is one of the high growth areas in
information technology. Mobile users will require information while on the
move. This gives great flexibility and convenience for data access. There
are increasing number of applications that utilize wireless data access.
Broadcast is one of the most suitable forms of information dissemination
over wireless networks. It is particularly attractive for resource
limited mobile clients in asymmetric communications. To conserve battery
power of mobile clients and support faster access of information,
efficient data access methods are required. Our goal is to develop access
methods, especially indexing schemes, for satellite based multimedia
wireless databases. At first stage, we developed a testbed for the
evaluation of existing wireless indexing schemes. The testbed provides the
common benchmark for the performance evaluation. We present our criteria
for selecting indexing schemes for different applications. We also explore
how different factors affect the performance of these indexing schemes.
