Virginia Tech Transportation Institute

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, university level research center, was established in August 1988 in response to the U.S. Department of Transportation's University Transportation Centers Program and in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Transportation. VTTI’s primary mission is applied research, accomplished by attracting a multi-disciplinary core of researchers and by educating students in the latest transportation technologies through hands-on research and experience. VTTI has garnered a reputation as one of the leading transportation research institutions in the nation. Its cutting-edge research is effecting significant change in public policies in the transportation domain on both state and national levels.

VTTI's premier research facility is the Virginia Smart Road, a controlled test bed designed for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), human factors and safety research.  The research support infrastructure of the facility makes it an ideal location for intelligent transportation systems research.  The road is built to Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) standards.  The Smart Road has a large number of features and capabilities and is highly adaptable.
