Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center
The Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, Morven Park, Leesburg, is one of three campuses of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. (The others are College Park, Maryland, and Blacksburg, Virginia). The Center conducts basic and applied research programs focused on discovering better ways to safeguard animal and human health and improve animal productivity.
Researchers at the Medical Center are:
- developing vaccines and improving diagnostic tests for agricultural diseases such as brucellosis, swine pleuropneumonia and calf scours
- researching equine gastrointestinal disorders such as colic and ulcers and common problems afflicting performance horses, such as lameness and respiratory complications
- operating nationally recognized clinical nutrition research programs
- maintaining one of the nation's leading programs in organophosphate toxicology and neurotoxicity
- rapidly assembling significant programs in aquatic animal research and service
- investigating a number of human health disorders including cancer, heart disease, pregnancy toxemia, arthritis, diabetes, and neurological disorders
- developing improved techniques for correcting orthopedic problems in pets and exploring many other areas of companion animal health
